Eight student leaders have created a new online community for Showa students to use English during the winter of 2021. Starting on January 4 we will send a daily newsletter (Mon-Fri) to any Showa student who signs up. In it are some interesting things to consider in English. Also news about activities and events. And links to our Instagram account and our Line chat groups.
When students organized this, they were careful not to make it like a class. The idea is for you to do the things you normally do online, but in English. We hope you enjoy it. Check out our flyer for details. Or sign up for the newsletter directly.
We call it swucool because the original name was Cool English (in the winter, and because it is cool).
Tool of the Week: Feedly
Feedly is online software to organize your reading of blogs. Blogs are one of the best ways to keep up on recent information on the internet. The best ones are well organized and informative. Feedly helps you organize your blogs and make one easy place to read them all.
Starting out, you find a few blogs you like, and add them to your list (or feed). Each day, Feedly collects new articles from those blogs. I read about 35 blogs, and each day I might have 20-30 articles. Feedly makes it easy for me to choose the best ones to read. Feedly is just one rssリーダー, there are many more to choose from, but Feedly is the best. 説明書.
After a while, you choose the blogs that are more interesting, and Feedly sends you the best stuff on the internet. Here, you can see part of my feed, which has articles about general news and opinions, then my specialty, Educational Technology, or edtech.
Yours will look different.
The English Room is on the 2nd floor of Building 3 (B3) near the 教授室.It is a place to relax in English. You can study with friends, or play board games, or use iPads, or read bilingual books and magazines. Here is the English Room brochure 2017!
The English Lunches have been so popular (Day 1 with 8 students, Day 2 with 13, Day 3 with 21 and Day 4 with 37!) that we have to move to Room 3S01 .
The English Lunches are NOT classes. There is a teacher, but really, the students are in charge. They can choose to make the most of English Lunches by simply Speaking In English. Even if it is not perfect, practicing English helps learning English.
Students are adults. They can choose to learn or not. It is up to them. Please consider everyone, and speak as much English as you can.
OLN Newsela News: Wednesdays
This week: Two views of the news
What could be better? My favorite Newsela article of the week was about hacking teddy bears. A little kid shows how the Internet of Things (IOT) like refrigerators and cars and toys are dangerous because they can be hacked. The bonus is that you can see him present.
OLN Xreading News: Tuesdays
This week: Words Read vs Total Words
Please note that in Xreading there are TWO measures of Words.
Total Words: Words from books you have opened, but not finished.
Words Read: Words from books you have finished, and taken (and passed) the quiz.
Words Read are the only ones that count for your grade.
In the example below we can see one student finished a book of 659 words. But she did not finish the other longer book. Even though she finished reading (100%), she did not do the quiz. So it does not count.
Unfortunately, on your phone, the WORDs that show for each Assignment are TOTAL Words, not Words Read. Please check and make sure you finish books and that any books with numbers in pink do not count.
If you have any further questions or problems with Xreading, please see me any Monday in the English Room at Lunch Time. Thank you for your interest.
Facebook is a monster, and we created it. It sends us only information it thinks we will like. I spend too much time, and in the end, I realize, I have not gotten that much out of browsing Facebook. WOT (waste of time).
I also use Feedly (リーダー) to pull together (aggregate) many different blogs from around the internet. Each day, like a cow eats grass, I graze this selection of new articles and keep the ones I find interesting. This, over years, has helped me much more than Facebook. 説明書. Feedly uses a technology called RSS that does not change your opinion, it only brings you the articles you want. Much better for understanding the world.
Take charge of your own learning. It is hard work, but worth it. Or you can be lazy and help create a monster.

Tool of the Week: Quizlet
High school students in Silicon Valley near San Francisco are some of the most advanced computer users because many of their parents work in the computer industry, so they know how to study. Many of them use Quizlet to remember things. You can too.
Quizlet works like electronic flip cards, like the ones you used to test yourself in Junior High. But it does SO MUCH more. It can find translations for you to make your own cards, and you can share your card sets with your friends. There are thousands of sets already done for you to test yourself for TOEIC, or any other test. But I find making my own lists helps me remember best.
Quizlet monitors what you remember and what you don’t and asks you just at the right time to make your learning the best. Try it. You will like it. Here is a quiz about a Youtube video on Prison Food, which I made in less than 2 minutes.
It is a place to relax in English. You can study with friends, or play board games, or use iPads, or read bilingual books and magazines. Here is the English Room brochure 2017!
The English Lunches have been so popular (Day 1 with 8 students, Day 2 with 13, Day 3 with 21 and Day 4 with 37!) that we have to move to another room.
Room 3S01 is much larger, so we can spread out and still make lots of interesting groups for discussion of all kinds of things. Come and chat to make friends and find out lots!
OLN Newsela News: Wednesdays
This week: News and more news
You may be so busy doing homework that you forget that English is a great way to learn about the world. Newsela is a great source of news because it is filtered. They choose only the most important news, and they write it 4 different ways, so if you can’t understand, you can look at an easier version.
I don’t know about you, but I am a little tired hearing about Donald Trump and the situation in the US. But Newsela has lots of other articles, like about Domino’s pizza sauce (yum), or
