Welcome to this week’s OLNews, a (月) look forward at the week’s posts about learning English for SWU ELC students (and any others!)

Upcoming: Week of May 8-14
Tuesday (火) Xreading:  Use the 5-finger rule to find your level
Wednesday (水) Newsela: Making discussion groups
Thursday (木) English Room: English Room Now Open
Friday (金) Tool: Copy and paste with a keyboard

Welcome back from Golden Week. We start a very intensive period of English study in classes until the end of July. Now is the time to build good habits

Before you start, though, you should look at yourself. “Know Yourself” was first written in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago, and has become very popular, because it is the key to success. These days, you can even do better that to “Know Yourself”, you can measure yourself. There are many ways you can measure your daily language learning. Programs like Newsela and Xreading have measurement built in. Like FitBit exercise checkers, they see what you actually read. This is called “Quantified Self.” When you start to measure yourself, you can understand yourself better.

OLN News Week 3: Golden Week

Welcome to this week’s OLNews, a (月) look forward at the week’s posts about learning English for SWU ELC students (and any others!)

Upcoming: Week of April 24-30
Tuesday (火) Xreading:  Reading for Yourself
Wednesday (水) Newsela: Finding Articles for yourself
Thursday (木) English Room: English Lunches after Golden Week
Friday (金) Tool: YouGlish.com (YouTube video for pronunciation)

Next Week is Golden Week, so there will not be any Online Learning News. Not many classes, either. You will have time, which is a good thing, and a bad thing. It is good to have time to relax and do the things you want to. The bad thing is that you can lose ability if you don’t keep practicing during vacation.

Use your software during Golden Week. Research says that if you study English 20 minutes a day, you can keep your level up. So read a book, or watch a TED video, or read a Newsela article, or some Xreading Graded readers. Try out YouGlish to listen to YouTube videos for pronunciation help. Lots of things to do, you just have to try them out. So explore!

OLN News Week 2: Small Changes

Welcome to this week’s OLNews, a (月) look forward at the week’s posts about learning English for SWU ELC students (and any others!)

Upcoming: Week of April 17-23
Tuesday (火) Xreading:  What is XReading?
Wednesday (水) Newsela: What is Newsela?
Thursday (木) English Room: The English Room Schedule
Friday (金) Tool: Google Translate.

News: We have just finished our first full week of school. For some of you, that means BIG changes. Changes in how you live, how you work, and how you study. We hope this will lead to changes in how you think and feel, too.

It is important to be careful of big changes. Most people, if they try too many things, fail at all of them. Pick one important thing, and try to make a new habit. Follow the advice of one of the smartest people I know, Matt Cutts, from Google.

Try something new for 30 days. Watch this video for 3 minutes. Use the language help if you don’t understand. I have tried it myself, and it works.
