Chihiro and other members of Empowerment Setagaya Volunteering Club held an event to show foreigners some typical Japanese cultural activities (書道、合気道、琴）. She met a singer from Malaysia and other interesting people.

Showa Women’s University walked away with 2 of the 3 top prizes at the 13th annual Hitomi Cup speech contest. Ms. Shirai from the Department of International Studies won the International Herald Tribune/Asahi Shinbun Cup, with a prize of a plaque and 10,000 yen in book certificates. Ms. Arai from our ELC department won the top prize, with a week-long trip to Boston.

Ms. Arai spoke about her experience in writing, producing, directing, and acting in a stage play based on Legally Blonde at our Showa Boston campus. You are welcome to watch .

Ms. Kondo was another contestant from ELC, with a speech about volunteering at a food shelter and her interactions with homeless people. Please watch.

OK, so you missed the lecture by Daniel Dolan “Be Strong, Be Smart, Don’t be Cute.” Now you have to make up the lecture. Here are the instructions.

1) Watch the videos. There are six of them. Each one is about 10 minutes. Take notes while you watch.

Note that there is a small time gap between video 4 and 5, we had to change batteries! Also, if your Internet connection is slow, you can download the videos to your computer while you have dinner or do other homework, and then play them without pauses.

2) Write your report. Follow the instructions posted by Sugihashi-sensei.
3) Do the quiz. It is only 10 questions.

TO GET TO THE QUIZ you have to sign in to MOODLE.(Click here)

Use your STUDENT NUMBER (21209999) for your USERNAME and your PASSWORD.
(If you already use Moodle, try this method here first. If you can’t get into MOODLE, use your old name and password. Email Ryan if you forgot.)

To do the quiz, click on the quiz name and answer the questions. Be sure to save your quiz (SUBMIT) when you are finished.

That’s all. If you don’t get a good score on the quiz, you might have to do more work. We will be in touch with you.

MTV is the world wide music TV station in the United States. What you have to know is that the TV programs they show in America is available on line for FREE! They have about 30 programs regularly about American culture or reality life of American people. You will learn useful real English through watching those shows.   -MichikoS

Volunteer to be a guide

If you are interested in talking in  English with foreign people and want to enjoy meeting new people, guide volunteer may be good for you. Tokyo Free guide is an organization which helps overseas visitors experience Japanses culture and customs. you should be able to speak at least one language besides Japanses to sign up for volunteer, have interests in culture, and have resposiblities for what you do. If you are eager to talk and meet foreign visitors, this organization may be good for you.  -AikoS

This is a book that I’m using in my vocaburaly building class. It has a lot of advanced English words and can able to increase your vocaburaly. It may be difficult for you to learn by yourself at first, but it certainly increases your vacaburaly if you continue learning it.
