-by MikakoI went to Nakaminato, Ibaragi at the beginning of May. It was seriously damaged by the big Tsunami generated by the 3.11 earthquake. The tsunami carried away many things. Nakaminato is a fishing harbour. Along the seaside, there are fish markets and restaurants. It is famous for fish market and sightseeing. And there are also a lot of local fish restaurants which are always filled with people tourist especially on vacation. Most of them have suffered from the tsunami and earthquake.
On that day I went there, there were so many tourists. The restaurant was filled with people. And fish markets were too and they were lively. There was little damage from this big disaster remained. Nakaminato is recovering. The bridge connecting Nakaminato was repaired on May 5. On 4/28 when about one and half month had past from this disaster, all of the shops in Nakaminato started to sell. I bought some fish very cheap and I had a lunch in a local Sushi restaurant. People in Nakaminato said Nakaminato is now safe, we are recovering from disaster and please come to Nakaminato again. Tourist said I came here to help Nakaminato. I was surprised at their energy and I was glad to see people were helping each other. I come to think I want to support victims of this disaster more and more in that way I can do.
-by MiyukiAs you know, Boston has a big sports event which is the Boston Marathon. Most of runners want to run it. Few weeks ago, it held in Boston. Every year, about 30000 people joined the race and then a man who was a victory in the race broke the new record but it wasn’t official because if people break the time, marathon’s record needs to run returning same course. The Boston Marathon’s course is not round just straight. That’s why he wasn’t new hero in the Boston Marathon.

-by TsukasaDonald Keene, a prince of study of Japanese literature in the U.S., a Columbia professor, 88 years old mentioned that he wants to have the right to permanent residence of Japan by this fall. Keene explained “I thought the best way to show Japan which I love my gratitude for it is being Japanese.” He said East Japan earthquake intensified his thought. He had last class at Columbia University on April 26th and closed 56 years of his life as a teacher. At the beginning of the class, he said “Today will be my last lecture. I will be going to Japan. I expect to spend rest of my life there. This decision was great surprise for some Japanese, because many foreigners are afraid of radiation. However other people have written me my decision was given them courage. I hope this is true. It is the least I can do for Japanese people who have treated me with amazing kindness for many years.” I’m proud that there is a foreigner who loves Japan a lot.
Pretzels are kinds of unfamiliar food for Japanese people. Therefore there are few stores which sell Pretzels in Japan. Comparing with that, many American people seem to like and eat them more often. So there are many stores which have Pretzel on their menu. If you are in America, you can see some people eating Pretzels in many scenes..
Auntie Anne’s is one of the most famous chain Pretzel shops which opened in America. As of 2010 there are more than 1,000 stores among 23 countries. It has been loved by many people there and finally it was opened in Japan. Although Pretzel was unfamiliar food to Japanese, it could have a good reputation sooner. Now there are many people in line to get them in front of the store.

Recently interesting feed is very popular at some pet shops. For example, ice cream and cakes and Oden (a kind of Japanese food) and so on. Actually we often see new product like that for our pets. When I feed, they are glad to eat. Anyway, I am curious about what they think of these foods. And then I walked around and asked some masters. They think their pet is part of family, so they want their pet to eat same food like we usually eat. Now, TV program also introduces many recipes how to cook pet food. How interesting!
National Center for Educational Statistics OECD Website
-by Kana F.Japan’s ranking had been falling in the international academic survey of 15-year-old students by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). In the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Japan fell from 8th place in 2000 to 15th place in 2006 in reading comprehension, from first place to 10th place in mathematical literacy and from second place to 6th place in scientific literacy. However in the 2009 PISA, Japan moved up to 8th place in reading, to 9th in math and to 5th in science. Researchers analyze this result as an educational reform which took place after severely criticized yutori education. National Center for Educational Statistics OECD Website
